Students use hand-operated pumps (supplied)<br \/>\nto increase or decrease the pressure in the left-hand<br \/>\ncylinder (the reservoir) which moves a \u2018liquid piston\u2019 of oil<br \/>\nin the right-hand cylinder (the test cylinder). This piston<br \/>\ncompresses or decompresses a trapped column of air in<br \/>\nthe test cylinder.<\/li>\n<li>A digital indicator measures the change in height of the trapped air column. When multiplied by the cross-sectional area of the column, this gives the change in volume. A mechanical pressure gauge measures the pressure of the trapped air<\/li>\n<li>A thermocouple and digital display measure the temperature of the trapped air to make sure that students maintain a constant air temperature during tests.<\/li>\n<li>Students maintain a constant temperature while recording<br \/>\nthe changes in volume with applied pressure.
